Getting new eyes would then make you four-eyes....or if you already wore glasses then you'd be six-eyes? hmm....

I like how you're blog is prepping and getting psyched up for your big trip with all these 'voyage' and 'discovery' kinda quotes :)

I think it's genetics and distance --i.e., nature and nurture, inherent and learned. It just makes sense that Down Under folks want to see the rest of the world, based on their British/Anglo Saxon heritage and culture (I'm serious), which tends to value acquisition of knowledge, exploration, individual pursuits, etc., and the fact that the so-called rest of the world (Europe, Asia, South America, Africa) is geographically quite far...my analysis is that these two factors predispose folks to travelling...combined with the "Ulysses" factor (Google it), i.e., what some claim is the innate human urge (stronger in some people than others) to explore, roam, wander...

In the end, though, the most important voyage is indeed the voyage of self-discovery, whether this is accomplished by actual physical travel or not...but that can be a really amazing catalyst to make that it happen!

Great quote, Kate...but, of course, it sometimes takes travelling outside of one's normal realm of experience to get the ability to see things with new eyes...which is what you're gonna do.

Did you know that Proust was very sickly as a child, and apparently spent a good deal of time in bed as a child, reading reading reading. I suspect he traveled a good deal in his head/imagination, because he wasn't physically well. Hence his feeling that travelling is seeing things with new eyes and mind, not necessarily seeing new physical places...

Kate, I guess I am late in the game here. Where are you traveling to? What is the first stop? Maybe once I read some more I can figure that out.

Sounds like a great plan! Great Quote. tdfpo

Absolutely. If we skew everything through a filter (like a "depressing" filter that makes everything seem sad) then it doesn't matter how many new things we see -- we'll still be sad.

But if we change the filter, or better, get rid of the filter, that's when the world starts looking different.

Happy New Year. Thanks for visiting my blog!
