There seems to be no end to destroying the past landscape and replacing it with a concrete jungle.

I tend to agree with you anonymous. Dubai is certainly awash with construction and is slowly losing its "middle eastern" feel.

The construction in Dubai which began in 1970s, continued agressively into 80s and seems to have intensifying from 90s and onwards. To live in dubai you really have to stretch you dirham to make it go a long way.

I agree... unless you are spending your dirham on gold or sporting goods, that is. I do believe that the rapid construction is due to the UAE's recognition that there is only 30 years of oil left :) It seems tacky tourism is their only hope for survival as a country.

I wasn't long ago when driving to the otherside of the creek would take about approx. 20 mins. But now it takes forever, if you are lucky just to drive couple of kms.

I realise the country is planning for the inveitable future without "black gold" by creating an industry based on tourism. You can sustain the economy with tourism, but the govt should pay attention to the effects caused by it.

I lived in Dubai for 22 years.I grew up in Dubai. I left Dubai in 1998 for US to complete my Masters that is where I am presently. I was in Dubai as recent as last year. How long did you stay in Dubai?
