Hard Candy, Baby!

So into about the second hour of the Honolulu-Sydney leg, I swallowed my Nytol sleeping tablet, in preparation of the ten hours ahead. Now that I am home, I have to sit and laugh at the whole "flying home" experience. Every time a customs guy asked me whether "i'd enjoyed my stay", I'd burst into tears. One even asked me why i was leaving so soon when I had a Canadian work visa. After sobbing incoherently about "having to go home", I think he regretted asking!!! Despite experiencing erratic bursts of tears since leaving Vancouver, I did manage to laugh when the Captain said "If you are caught smoking in the toilets or any part of the aircraft, you will find the police waiting for you upon your arrival into Sydney with a glass of champagne and a free ride home." I considered sparking up in the loo, just to test his humour and just...because.

Instead, once settled into my seat, I decided that sleep was the only option - I had already seen Pirates of the Carribean II before (though, there shouldnt really be a limit on the number of times watching hot Johnny Depp in a pirates get up), I'd read my Times magazine from front to back and then some before hitting the runway, and everyone else seemed to be settling in for the night as well. So sleep it was (not that I havent had enough sleep in the past two weeks!). I snuggled up into my big fur jacket and off I went into a reasonably peaceful slumber which lasted for the majority of the flight.

After battling the familiar process of Australian customs, I fell apart at the sight of my sister and Charlotte. Charlotte knew exactly who I was, and I forgot that it had actually only been two weeks since she'd last seen me. I recieved a gummy grin, and her head fell to my shoulder, in the same way it had done only weeks prior. After a celebratory coffee and a "poopy nappy change" at McDonalds, my sister and I went off into the Suburban Sunset (not quite - it was 8.30am, but I have to dramatise this, right?).

Thats where the fun began. I only had a moment to drop my bags, give my cat a quick cuddle, change my clothes and attempt a cup of tea and off I was marched down to the doctors for a bit of a "catch up" with the doc. Good news followed - I am the proud owner of not only a middle ear infection but also an outer ear infection (??). The vampire in the white coat also took a couple of vials of blood in order to check for glandular fever and other sorts of viruses. In return, I injected a bit of finance back into the pharmaceutical industry and came away with a whole load of Panadeine Forte, Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid tablets and some Ciproxcin HC Ear Drops. Thats some serious Hard Candy!

Laugh as I may, on a more serious note, coming home has been hard, especially when just two weeks ago, I was flying out to Canada with a ticket in my hand and the world "as my oyster". Its comforting to be around family and once I settle in, I am sure the sadness will go away, but while I was downtown, I went past the local surf and snowboard shop and felt terrible. Mum told me that the weatherman from Channel Nine has been doing his morning shows from Whistler this week, and I've decided that it would probably be best if I avoid watching that for now. I'm yet to pull out the gifts I managed to get for the family. I dont want to over-dramatise it, but its just hard. I am disappointed, and sad, and angry and frustrated.

Back on a lighter note, word seems to have gotten around (it tends to, when you spill yer guts out on a daily blog) and I continue to get messages from people.

I'll be back on my feet in no time, and am already planning my next trip!
